The Immanuel Dramatic Society’s pantomime for 2012 is Robin Hood’s Holiday, which runs from Friday 13th Jan to Saturday 21st Jan. To book tickets please call the Box Office on (01793) 531710.

The pantomime promises to be an excellent eveing’s entertainment with something for all the family!

Harvest Appeal: An update

Our harvest appeal was mentioned in the Vietnam Laos Cambodia Medical Scientific Aid News Bulletin (www.msavlc.co.uk). Here’s what they wrote:

Well done, Immanuel! The congregation of Immanuel Church, Swindon has raised the amazing sum of £3,300 in their Harvest Appeal to support the work of Rostitus Cheng in Phnom Penh. Many of you will remember the story of Rostitus and his wonderful work helping children who live on a rubbish dump. The money raised by Immanuel will not only fund the training of staff in basic primary health care (such as how to deal with eye and ear infections, burns, cuts and other injuries sustained by the children as they search through mountains of rubbish), but will also pay for the provision of first aid supplies for the next three years. A big thank you goes to all the congregation and in particular to the World Concerns Committee who recommended MSAVLC as their chosen charity for this year’s appeal.

Threshold’s annual sponsored sleep-out

Sunday 11th Dec 10.30am -Young Immanuel Nativity service, when we will be bringing presents for children and placing them under the tree.

and at 6.30pm – Carols by Candlelight – a traditional service with carols and lessons with church choir

Sunday 18th Dec 10.30am – Carols by Daylight – service of readings, poems and carols with the church choir

and at 6.30pm – Pause for Thought – a shortened reflective service on the true meaning of the Season, led by Geoff Gleed with the choir.

Operation Christmas Child

We wish to thank everyone for their support for Operation Christmas Child. We had 40 boxes, lots of donations and an extra £30 in donations towards the cost of sending the parcels. Well done everyone!

Calling all photographers

Immanuel’s Outreach Group is devising a leaflet that will be handed to visitors to the church when they use the premises or attend Sunday worship. A number of church friends have produced some excellent photos that will be included on the inside pages but they are looking for a good shot to go on the front cover to express what Immanuel is all about.

The group thought it would be good to open up the opportunity for everyone to make a contribution and show off their photographic skills. It needs to be a photo in ‘portrait format’ (taller than it is wide) and ideally ought to show Immanuel people rather than just the building, so a fairly recent photo is called for (sorry, sepia tints are out!).

Since will also have to be reduced in size, it does need to be very clear. If we receive sufficient pictures, we will display them all and maybe hold a competition! If you think you have a suitable snapshot, or feel like taking a new one, please pass it to Steve or Robert over the next week or so – it needn’t be an elec onic version (but if it is, it will help!)

The Xmas Factor

On 3rd December 2-5pm the Old Town Partnership will be holding a Christmas Event for children (school years 1 – 6). It is called The Xmas Factor and will be lookingat some of the traditions of Christmas through crafts, games and song. Forms will be handed out nearer the time.

Immanuel Building Works

Well after the months, nay years, of discussion and debate, the works are finally underway. Our chosen contractors, Heaths, moved in on November 1st and within hours, the old disabled ramp and steps leading to the back premises were no more! By the end of the week the footings were dug and they were ready to start the external blockwork. The same was true for the area at the back of the hall. Thanks are due to the great team who sorted out alternate access arrangements and moved furniture ready for the internal reconfiguration to start. Thanks too to everyone who kept a smile on their faces during the first few days of what could easily have been chaos. So far everything seems to be running smoothly!

Building work begins: 1st November

Here’s a quick note to let you know that building work on the new porch and entrance to Immanuel will begin on the 1st November. We realise that this might cause some inconvenience for folk who use the church but Immanuel will operate as normal (or as normally as possible) during the build.

If you have any questions please direct them to our Minister or Church Secretary.

Harvest Food Donations

At the recent Church meeting it was agreed that goods brought to the Harvest services this year should be shared between the Women’s Refuge and the Swindon Food Bank. In these hard financial times the Food bank is being called upon by an increasing number of families who are in desperate need and it seemed one way in which we can offer our support to those in the community who need help.

One other proposition from the Foodbank is to see if Immanuel could staff one of the collection days at a local supermarket, at which they ask for and collect donated food from shoppers. They run 6-8 collections a year so
with the number of churches they’re aiming to get involved, it would probably mean staffing a collection in this way perhaps once every two or three years.

There would be a choice of dates and some sort of training to those who eventually get involved. Is this something that Immanuel would be interested in? If you feel you could volunteer an hour or two as a volunteer, have a word with Steve or Robert.
