Harvest Appeal 2010: Elgon Youth Brass Band
This year we are going to raise funds for a project in Mbale, Eastern Uganda through the resources of Musequality set up by David Juritz in 2007. David is the leader of the London Mozart Players and the London Tango Quintet. This UK registered charity aims to support the development of music projects for underprivileged children in the developing world which will foster self-confidence and growth in their social, intellectual and spiritual capacities. It is not aimed at producing professional musicians but to give vulnerable children the chance to learn skills that offer them a route out of poverty, lifting them off the streets and away from the risks of drug culture, violence and crime.
Mbale, the chief town of the Mbale district in southern eastern Uganda has a population of around 60,000. It lies 190km northeast of Kampala the Ugandan capital. Frederick Kyewalyanga the director of the Elgon Youth Brass Band in Mbale has through the help of Musequality been able to rent, complete with running water and indoor toilets, a large building in which to practise and play and to provide safe storage for musical instuments. It also provides a place for the twenty-five band members, who are street children, to sleep in safety and also for ten others who are not band members.
Through our Harvest Appeal we at Immanuel have the opportunity to help the Elgon Youth Band members and street children of Mbale. By rasing £2500 we can provide furniture for the building and more musical instruments.
Your World Concerns Committee would like you to support this worthy project generously. Anyone who has played a musical instrument, or sung in a choir or group, knows that it teaches skills that are valuable in other aspects of life. Frederick Kyewalyanga says “All the members of the band feel a news sense of enthusiasm and they are so happy, all because of music”.

In addition to this appeal any money recovered through your use of Gift Aid envelopes will be kept and used as an immediate response to any of the disasters that unfortunately occur each year. Last year’s Gift Aid money helped provide support for people affected by earthquakes in Haiti and the flooding in Pakistan.
